The self-employed and saving for later life
There are now around five million self-employed people in the UK, and an increasing number of them are women. At a time when we are seeing falling pension participation by the self-employed, we will discuss how this segment of the working population is saving for later life. And what can advisers, pension providers, the Government and regulators do to encourage more of the self-employed to save more money?

She will also look at some of the solutions that can meet this growing need to invest more sustainably.

Jane Nugent, Trustee – Smart Works Greater Manchester

Planting the seed of self-belief
Smart Works supports women in need into employment with a simple two-hour intervention including a ‘dressing’ appointment and interview coaching. In a relatively short amount of time, the transformation to visitors is astonishing and the seed of self-belief and an ability to succeed is planted. 65% of visitors go on to secure a job within a month, gaining financial independence and transforming their lives. Jane will be talking about some of her experiences of coaching the women who visit Smart Works and the positive impact this has on their self-belief, as well as sharing some helpful interview and confidence-boosting tips that we can all benefit from.

Ethical investing comes of age?
Ethical investing, or ESG, has been a buzzword on the edges of the investment industry for decades, but now we’re starting to see people use their savings to back their ethics – with flows into ethical investment strategies starting to rise. But what’s driving this trend, who are the investors backing the strategies and what are their goals? And as more money is drawn into these strategies, how are investment companies responding? Do we all need to be wary of greenwashing and cynical grabs for assets?

3:20pm

Julia Streets, Founder and CEO – Streets Consulting

Business, comedy and the comedy of business?
Julia Streets is an entrepreneur, podcaster, and stand-up comedian. As Founder and CEO of Streets Consulting, she and her team advise and mentor fintech firms in capital markets, payments and investment management. Julia is invited to speak at and host industry events around the world, based on 30 years of earning her industry pinstripes. She is the Founder and Host of ‘DiverCity Podcast’ – talking equality, diversity and inclusion in financial services – and actively promotes the commercial benefits that D&I can offer. She has interviewed hundreds of leading stars to shine a light on positive progress, call out areas requiring further focus and offer lots of ideas to inspire change (divercitypodcast.com). It’s set to be a fascinating and entertaining exploration of many trends, angles and perspectives facing the investment industry today.
